Boot ohne Namen. Das erste "Segelboot" habe ich in Queensland an der australischen Ostküste gebaut. Unter Verwendung günstiger Werkzeuge von Bunnings, dem lokalen Baumarkt, entstand aus einer Mischung von Langeweile, Tatendrang und ein paar Holzleisten das Funktionsmodell einer Gaffelslup. Das Bootchen konnte ich auf einem Teich am Meer mit festgelaschter Pinne seine Schläge von Ufer zu Ufer segeln lassen.

Boat with no name. On the Moreton Bay shores of Queensland, Australia I built my first "sailboat". With a couple of disposable woodworking handtools found at BUNNINGS, the local hardware store, a mixture of boredom, actionism and some strips of wood I built that model of a gaff rigged sloop. With the tiller lashed, it sailed its legs from shore to shore. Always right accross the seaside pond.

Yggdrasil (2001-2002).  Next step up was converting the storage space below the little Queenslander house into a boat warf for something where a person actually can sit in while it's on the water. I drew up building plans for a dinghy inspired by the gaff yachts I dreamed of. Which made for a rather unconventional vessel. But it sailed none the less. With a converted Bermuda main doubling up for the new gaff main and the jib . Here my new pals came into play, giving me a hand where ever they could. Klaus, the German/ Australian owner of a Woodworking tool shop and builder-owner of Godoe.  Glen, the concreter passed down the sail. And the local chandler  freely gave me an agreeable package price on the bundle of ropes and fitting-out hardware. Listing those, I shouldn't miss to mention Marieke, the young lady that joint in building in the shade of that old Queenslander. The girl pulling the boat down to Manly Harbor and who wasn't afraid of sailing the trials with me. Turned out that those were the trials for much more than knocking about in a curiously designed dinghy. We knocked about life ever since and got married five years later.

Chesapeake Seekajak (2006). die Vorgängerboote verblieben in Australien und das Bootsbauen war weiter kein Thema als wir das Leben von Stadtmenschen in Neu Isenburg führten. Marieke studierte während dieser vier Jahre in Frankfurt. Mit dem Umzug nach Berlin und den Möglichkeiten, die sich dort für Wassersportler bieten, wuchs auch mein Wunsch aufs Wasser zu kommen. Bei ebay habe ich mir ausgerechnet ein 5m Seekajak aus Sperrholz gekauft, vielleicht, weil es gerade noch so in unser Arbeitszimmer passte. Das Deck musste gelöst werden, um später spaltfrei wieder aufgeleimt werden zu können. Das kleine Boot brachte große Verbesserungen im Sinne, dass ich es über die Strasse tragen und dort direkt ins Wasser der Dahme an der alten olympischen Regattastrecke lassen konnte. Wir haben das Kajak immer noch, aber heute ruht es meistens unterm Schuppendach.

Chesapeake sea kajak (2006). while the predecessors remained in Australia and boat building wasn't an issue in our time as city dwellers, living in Neu Isenburg. Marieke studying in Frankfurt during those four years. The urge came creeping back on me when we moved to Berlin with its promising lake districts all around. 

I got me a 5m sea kajak, maybe because it just fit in our study. Removed the deck to glue it back on later without gaps that hadn't found my approval in the original make. This little boat brought great improvements in the sense that I literally could carry it across the street, put it in the water and paddle, Köpenick waters and the historical former olympic Regattastrecke Berlin-Grünau. We still have the boat but today its mostly resting under the sheds roof.

Crumulus ( gebaut 2013-2015, Penobscot 17 von Arch Davis).  Wenn man dabei ist ein Haus zu bauen, dann braucht man auf jeden Fall auch einen Schuppen im Garten. In meinem sollte mindestens ein Folkeboot Platz haben. Dazu ist es bis jetzt noch nicht gekommen. Hauptsächlich wurder der Platz von Baumaterial, Fahrrädern, Bobby cars und ähnlichem eingenommen. Aber drei Jahre nach unserem Einzug sind die Bootbau Ideen wieder aufgetaucht. Der richtige Moment, die Südwand des Schuppens wie geplant durch ein zweiflügliges Tor auszutauschen und sich einen Satz Bootspläne für das nächste Projekt zu beschaffen. Diese fand ich bei Arch Davis in der Bauanleitung der Penobscot 17. Eine Möglichkeit das Hobby in den eigenen Garten und zur Familie zu holen. Die Penobscot nach Davis Plänen zu bauen war für mich eine grundlegend neue Erfahrung, das Handbuch voll mit Wissen über Holzarbeiten und Grundlagen um sich damit auch praktische Fähigkeiten aneignen zu können. Eine der besten Lernerfahrungen die ich je aus einem Buch gewonnen habe. Theorie zum anfassen und umsetzen, veruchen und perfektionieren. Unsere Penobscot 17 haben wir nach einer Zauberpille aus Astrid Lindgens Pippi Langstrumpf CRUMULUS genannt. Es war eine Freude dieses Boot zu bauen und es ist eine Freude sie auf unserem Lieblingssee in Brandenburg zu segeln.

Crumulus ( built 2013-2015, Penobscot 17 by Arch Davis). Now, when you build a house you certainly need a shed in the backyard. And I planned mine to accommodate a Nordic Folkeboat, if nothing else. It didn't turn out to be such, though. And mostly it was building materials and pushbikes, bobby cars and the like. But three years from moving in, the boating wish welled up again. This was the time to install the ( preplanned ) double wing gate to the shed and look for a proven set of plans to build along. Which I found in Arch Davis's Handbook and drawings for the Penobscot 17. That fitted my plans of bringing the boating hobby right into the backyard and close to the family. Building the Penobscot was different from what I knew and a resource of woodworking knowledge and skill to gain. Wonderful. The most amazing learning experience I ever had from a book. Learn by reading, train you hand-skills, mess it up and then do it better. Our Penobscot is called CRUMULUS after an episode in Astrid Lindgrens Pippi Langstocking. A joy she was to build and a joy she is to sail and we like to do that on a beautiful lake in the state of Brandenburg.

Glühwürmchen ( FireBug 2.4 von John Spencer). Jeder Bootsbau geht irgendwann zu ende -wenn man Glück hat. Dann bleibt eine Menge freier Zeit in der "Nicht-Segelsaison" die man mit etwas anderem füllen kann. Etwas Anderes - wurde so auch der Werksname für ein Projekt, das später auf den durch Abstimmung bestimmten Namen Glühwürmchen getauft wurde. Das Neu-Seeländische Bootsdesign FireBug 2.4 von John Spencer. Aber den Anfang nahm diese Geschichte so. CRUMULUS war gerade fertig gestellt, und ich mental noch gänzlich im Bootsbaumodus, da kam der Wunsch auf, diese Begeisterung weiterzugeben. Bootsbau im Team, zusammen einer Idee Form verleihen, eine Eltern und Kinder Erfahrung an die man sich vielleicht noch lange erinnern möchte. Also luden wir Freund Bekannte und Nachbarn zu einem Kaffetrinken ein, um den Leuten einen Floh in den Pelz zu setzen. Es gab Kaffe und Kuchen und wir sprachen über den Flyer, in dem ich meine Phantasien zum Segeln und Bootsbauen auf Papier gebracht hatte. Weitere Ideen kamen auf den Tisch und die Palette reichte von der Yacht-Eignergemeinschaft bis zur pädagogisch geführten Kindergruppe. Ich führte den FireBug als mögliches Thema ins Feld. Es entwickelte sich der Plan in der Gruppe ein Boot gemeinsam zu bauen. Und ich war begeistert, passte meine Vorstellung von einer ganzen Flottile an den kleineren Rahmen an. Es bestand eben weniger der Wunsch eigene Boote zu besitzen als tatsächlich das gemeinsame Werken zu erleben. Und das war ja auch meine ursprüngliche Motivation.

Wir fingen tatsächlich mit dem Bau an. Über 18 Monate verteilten sich unsere Treffen von drei Familien, sechs Erwachsene und sechs Kinder. Die Ausdauer freute und überraschte mich gleichermaßen. Und die Unterstützung von allen, die gemeinsamen Abendessen, das kommen und gehen bei den Arbeiten machte es zu weit mehr als einem Holzbastelkurs. Es war ein gemeinsames Unternehmen mit einem gemeinsamen Ziel. Das "Drehen" des Rumpfes aus der Überkopf Position ist traditionell ein kleiner Meilenstein, eine Feier wert. Alle waren da, wieder ein Kaffee und Kuchen Nachmittag und auch mein Geburtstag. Die Gruppe überreichte mir ein Geschenk und es hat mich sehr berührt. Der Gutschein für unser nagelneues FireBug Segel. Das war cool und gab unserem Vorhaben noch einmal eine starke Motivation. Neben Sägespänen und kleben war Sonnenschein,  Wasser und Segeln wieder in den Fokus gerückt.   2018 haben wir schon zwei Segelsommer hinter uns. Unser Bau wurde auch journalistisch im Amerikanischen Wooden Boat Magazine gewürdigt. Im FireBug Newsletter waren wir die Titelgeschichte und somit auch im Australian Amateur Boutbilding Magazine abgedruckt. Glühwürmchen (2016-2017, FireBug 2.4 by John Spencer). Every boat-built comes to an end - when you are lucky. But that inevitably leaves one with a lot of off-sailing-season to be filled with something else. SOMETHING ELSE also was the production name of what was to become GLÜHWÜRMCHEN. A New Zealand boat design called Firebug 2.4. But this story  really started earlier. Still in the flow - I  just had finished CRUMULUS -we played with the idea of having others involved in a new project. A team effort, a co-working experience, a kids- and- parents -thing to be remembered. So we invited some friends, neighbors and people we generally know from having kids in the same age as ours over for tea. Together with the cake I handed out my flyer created for the occasion and we had a nice gathering. Listening to ideas ranging from restoring a wooden yacht to having a kids psychologist in the group for good measure. I introduced the little Firebug as a possible object of interest and with that I think  struck an agreeable accord.  That was with the  idea of doing woodworking with the kids, building together but on a single boat. 

This meeting gave me something to think about group dynamics but despite me scratching my head things did commence rather smoothly. We really started building in my shed. People did stick to the group and came to the building sessions with admirable standing power and great enthusiasm. And the sessions turned out to be much more than woodworking. Most of the time they also ended in a group dinner. The boat turning party ( up side down built ) happened to also be my birthday. They all where there. Another tea and cake afternoon. One gift that I received at that occasion  rather touched me. A voucher for a brand new  FireBug sail. What a booster! By now we have sailed the BUG during two summer. Meeting for a couple of days at the campground by our favorite lake. We made appearances in the press too.
